Joseph Pilates created his innovative method of training using many key ideas of Yoga, but moved towards a less spiritual and more physical goal.

He observed that many conventional ways of working out actually focused on the outer 'showy' muscles. This was a mistake in his opinion. He discovered that we actually depend on muscles deep insode, rather than on the outside of our bodies to help us move with grace and strength.

Pilates really can work wonders for those who have back pain or neck pain from sitting in front of computers all day, or just not being active due to the demands of work. It can also be greatly beneficial to people recovering from a back injury.

The reason is that it develops the so-called 'core' muscles of the torso. These don't get so much of a workout when people just try for a 6-pack for looking good at the beach. Yet, many also speak of how their body was transformed, more toned and slimmer, due to effects of the Pilates method.

Furthermore this change is accompanied by emotional and mental improvements. This feeling of newfound vigour and youth is the result of unlocking the body's true strength.
